Xanda - /dev/project - Double your disk read performance in a single command

Here's the magic I used to double sequential read performance:

[root@cyberman mydb]# blockdev --getra /dev/sdb
[root@cyberman mydb]# blockdev --setra 262144 /dev/sdb

In retrospect, 262144 (about 128 MB!) was a TAD overkill. More realistic values are 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192, and maybe really depends on the number of hard disks, their speed, your RAID controller, etc. With the 3Ware 9500S, I experienced significantly diminishing returns after 4096; your mileage may vary.
